Barkuma Neighbourhood Centre Inc is a not-for-profit community organization that has been serving the Aboriginal community since 1994. It provides a welcoming environment and a place of identity and belonging for the community. The center offers various services such as social support, energy accounts payment assistance, Hunter water account assistance program, Barkuma hut, and The Lemon Turtle. Barkuma is registered as a COVID Safe business and is committed to maintaining the wellbeing of staff and the community.
Barkuma Neighbourhood Centre Inc was established as a result of a community meeting held in Cessnock Council hall in 1994. The community identified the need to have a welcoming place for support and assistance without prejudice. Since then, Barkuma has provided culturally appropriate services to its clients and has assisted them in achieving their goals. The organization has lifted the profile of the Aboriginal community and continues to be a home away from home for the community it serves.
