NDIS plans can be managed in three main ways: agency-managed, plan-managed, or self-managed.

Choosing the right management option is an important part of making the most of your plan. Each option affects how you pay for supports and how much control you have over your budget and providers.

Agency-managed

With agency-managed supports, the NDIA pays providers directly. This can be simpler for participants who want less admin, but it means you may have fewer choices because some providers may not work with agency-managed funding.

Plan-managed

A plan manager helps you manage your budget, pay invoices, and keep track of spending. This can give you more provider choice while still providing support with administration.

Self-managed

With self-management, the participant or nominee takes more responsibility for paying providers and managing the budget. This option gives the most flexibility and choice, but also requires more organisation and admin.

Many participants choose the option that best matches their confidence, support needs, and personal goals. If you are unsure, a support coordinator, plan manager or local area coordinator can help explain the differences.
